Everything inside of me felt too tight, too compacted and I wasn’t helping by squeezing my eyes shut. Hot water soaked my hair, ran down my back, and steam rose thick enough that I thought I could trace my fingers through it, eyes closed or not.

But the ice had come back, dense and impenetrable, surrounding me on every side.

Reaching back, blind, I tried to find the knob to turn the water hotter. Except I shut off the shower and blinked open my eyes, lashes sticking together. The bathroom wavered and blurred, then came in bits and pieces. Dark, burnished metal, colorful tiles, fogged-over see-through shower curtains, and a row of luxury bath products.

All in Italian.

Breath fluttered between my lips and I almost smiled as I looked around with clinical, detached interest. I wondered what yesterday MJ would've thought of today's MJ standing in Luc's apartment, taking a shower, after being almost kidnapped.

Mere minutes after being thoroughly kissed.

I sucked in a breath and my eyes shut again. The ice threatened to crack, a throb going through me, and I curled my wrinkled fingers into tight fists against my thighs. I couldn't think of that. I couldn't think of anything from the last few hours except in bits and bursts, otherwise, I would fall apart.

I marveled that I kept it together. Sure, I was numb and didn’t exactly recall getting to Luc’s apartment. But I knew that he’d brought me and my bag, carried both in his arms, and then tried to talk to me, tried to feed me, asked what I’d wanted.

That had jolted me. Crawling out of my skin, desperate, I’d wanted to get out of those clothes and wash off the feeling of being helpless, of that bone-cracking terror, of that wild, desperate hope that somehow Luc would know and come.

I reached up and hugged myself.

And then he did.

I couldn’t remember it, it was all a fast-moving, chopped-up series of images in my head with a buzzing sound overlaying it, as though hearing a scream through static.

What I did remember was the look in Luc's eyes. Terror clashing with rage, the blue filled with protective fire that sent a shiver of heat through me. Some of the ice thawed and I could feel a few resolute butterflies hanging on.

A rap of knuckles on the bathroom door jarred me back to where I was, dripping and silent, standing naked in Luc’s shower. The curtain had de-fogged enough that if he came in, he would see me, and a vague thrill went through my stomach.

“MJ?” Was I imagining the rough, sad note in Luc’s voice? “I heard the shower turn off and, well, I got you some clothes. They’ll be huge on you but it’s something, right?” A soft thud like he’d dropped his head against the door and again, I almost smiled. “Anyway, I guess I’ll leave them in the room across the hall, okay? I made up the bed and...”

Luc continued to ramble and I shook my head. Pulling back the curtain, it rattled the metal rings, and he stopped.
